If you’re in charge of organizing a bridal shower, you might be stressing out, not least because it’s pretty common for bridal showers to cost a lot more than expected. Like with so many other things, though, you can save a lot of money with a little bit of creativity. And because we understand how challenging it can be to come up with those first few ideas, we wrote this article to help all you maids of honor and bridesmaids out there. Here, we’ll cover three fun and creative bridal shower ideas we’ve seen over the years, each selected because they result in unique keepsakes or skills that all of you can take with you after the party. And best of all, you won’t be spending too much money on any of them. 💸
Side Note: One or two of you may already be married. So it won’t hurt to start planning for an anniversary party, too. 😉
1. Calligraphy Workshop
Elegant handwriting is a beautiful skill, but sadly, it isn’t taught as much anymore and has largely been forgotten over the years. However, it hasn’t disappeared entirely! There are still lots of videos, books, and articles available online that teach all the techniques used in both traditional and modern calligraphy. Alternatively, you can hire a calligrapher to come to your bridal shower and teach you all some of those techniques in person.
Aside from the expense of hiring a professional, the only costs associated with calligraphy are the pens, inks, and paper, all of which you can easily find and purchase online. These supplies can also make great gifts for each attendee after the party. This is particularly true for traditional fountain pens and nibs (the tips at the end of the pen), which are designed to be refillable and can last a lifetime.
And don’t forget the paper! Quality paper can make all the difference aesthetically. Weight, thickness, texture, finish, absorbency, and color are some of the things that make the difference between good paper and excellent paper. You might want to use standard notebook or craft paper for your initial learning and practice. But for your final pieces, you may want to create a memorable, framable keepsake by graduating to something more sophisticated like:
- Italian marbled paper (ideal for sentimental messages, poetry, and things like that)
- Natural goatskin parchment paper (great for medieval enthusiasts)
- Egyptian papyrus (perfect for copying Biblical verses, especially in their original Greek or Hebrew)
- Mulberry paper (traditionally used for calligraphy in Asian countries)
- Khadi paper (traditionally made and used in India)
2. Learn to Make Non-Toxic Beauty Products
We’re sure you’ve probably already been spooked more than once by looking at the ingredients listed on a bottle of concealer or foundation. And if you’ve never had that experience yourself, we encourage you now to go and check the containers of any cosmetics, skincare products, perfumes, moisturizers, and even soaps that you currently use. See just how many of those ingredients you recognize or can even pronounce. Do you think all that stuff is good for your skin? Wouldn’t it be great if your products made your skin more beautiful instead of just painting over it to cover the damage and breakouts caused by toxic chemical exposure?
Well, the good news is that, just like food, nature is full of ingredients that not only won’t hurt you but will rehydrate and reinvigorate your skin. Transform a kitchen in one of your houses into a beauty lab where you transmute natural ingredients into the elixirs of youth and vitality. Crafting non-toxic beauty products at home not only ensures that you know every ingredient that touches your skin but also allows you to tailor formulations to your unique needs. You can blend soothing aloe vera gel with a few drops of lavender essential oil for a calming facial serum or create a hydrating body scrub with coconut oil, honey, and brown sugar. These homemade concoctions are free from harmful chemicals and harness nature’s potency in its purest form.
And for those of you who are more enterprising, a fun experiment like this might even become a home business once you’ve got your recipes worked out. Follow in the footsteps of inspirational brands like Native and Shea Moisture to create your own line of custom healthy cosmetics or even fragrances. With all the great things you can find in nature, the only limit is your imagination. Cultivate a more intimate and caring relationship with your skin, and embrace your natural beauty instead of covering it up with harsh chemicals and heavy metals. 🙂
3. Healthy Cooking Class
If you live in America (or almost anywhere else on Earth), odds are high that, on any given day, you are eating or drinking at least a dozen things that you shouldn’t be. From all the different types of sugars and artificial sweeteners to food colorings to the shavings from your plastic cutting board and even potentially your non-stick pans, you’d be shocked by how many toxic chemicals you are exposed to daily via food and drink.
Especially if the bride or any of the rest of you at the bridal shower have or plan to have kids, there are few more valuable skills than being able to cook a healthy meal for you and your family. And you can all pass that knowledge on to your respective spouses and children. Isn’t that wholesome?
There are few better ways to let your loved ones know you care about them than by nourishing them with healthy food. And just as famed toxicologist Dr. Yvonne Burkart tells us, that doesn’t always necessarily mean what’s printed on the container. So increase your knowledge of the foods you eat and feed to your family, deepen your relationship with your body, and maybe hire a chef to help teach all of you some expert culinary skills like prepping and plating. 🧑🍳
Have Fun With It! 🙂
